Thanks, nice photo, I do remember that day (so what was the absolute last steam movement on the line ?). I have a lot of old slides of family stuff from the 70s/80's , none of the SSR, but I have found some of the compound at Chasewater in about '73 chock full of rusty old locos and stock, will try and scan the slides in sometime :)

Hi Dave, The Great Bear you are thinking of was in fact a Castle with an 8 wheel tender and it only made a few visits to the line. No. 5000 is now on the Great Cockrow Railway.I too saw Leander and photographed it by Ryders Hayes Crossing.

Just noticed the stuff below about the Walsall Steam Railway .. I knew it well as we had a plant stand and stall at Walsall Show and I used to come hang around quite a bit, I just looked at the site of the stock it used to have and what was my favourite one isn't listed .. I'm positive there was a model of 111 The Great Bear on the line ... I too wonder what happened to them all .. Hmmmm :)

Hi & thanks for the welcome as for the photos, it's been so long since I've seen them that I reckon they've bitten the dust sadly, they were tiny prints but.. interesting, mid 60's I think, he also had some of Duchesses at Trent Valley. Only steam engine I saw on the line in my time was preserved 5690 Leander running through light one summer's day :)

Thanks, Tim. I'm trying to put as much info as poss on the WalsallSteamRailway site - Derek Burwell has passed on a load of photos of which I've scanned in about 50. The site allows others to upload their own photos! Happy New Year to all!

Hi. Noticed you used to drive (the black 9F?) at Walsall Arboretum. Do you know where the loco is now? There's a photo of Dave Spiers driving it in Derek Burwell's gallery at www.freewebs.com/walsallsteamrailway. ps I've now got both volumes of Bob Yate's book!

Hi Guys, I stumbled on the site by accident whilst looking for photos of the line and found some of my own in the Norton Junction section.I have lived in Pelsall and Brownhills West for nearly all of my life and regard the closure of the line as an act of vandalism.I fully support the aims of the site in lobbying for the reopening of the line.
My Great Grandfather was a driver at Ryecroft Shed .
My Dad was in the cab of the class 46 while the footage on this site was being shot.
I used to be a driver on the Walsall Steam Railway in the Arboretum and I am a member at the Severn Valley and at Chasewater.
Best Regards to you all, Tim Spiers.
