The loco in the photo is 49198 and is on the "up" Norton Branch. At this time both the Up and down Norton lines were being worked as "Through sidings" between Norton Junction No.1 Signal Box and Norton Junction No.3 Signal Box. No.3 also controlled movements from the "up" hump into the "Up Loaded sidings" which are those shown on the photo. At this time the LNW class 7Fs - "Super D"s or "Duck 8"s as we called them worked as the shunt locomotive for the Up hump. We suspect that it has probably just coupled up a brake van to the rear of the freight train in the Up line. This was the last year of a Super "D" on this working as a diesel 0-6-0 (to become class "08" shunter) replaced the steam locomotive. However, these workhorses were never replaced on some of the Norton Branch coal workings, the branch retaining steam right up to the end of both the collieries and the line.
